From April 19-21, the Meredith College Dance Department will be holding their annual ‘DanceWorks’ showcase in Jones Auditorium. During this weekend of dance, four performances will take place.
Carol Finley, the Department Chair of Dance and Theater, shared that “DanceWorks is a collection of dances created by different artists so it’s what is called a repertory concert.” Finley added that the performances focus on creating enjoyment for the audience and a “visual, kinesthetic, and/or idea-based effect.” Finley noted that this is the biggest event of the year for the dance department, with “32 dances and 60 performers!”
Hannah Smith, ‘26, and Sydney Nelson, ‘25, are both performers and choreographers at the upcoming DanceWorks showcase. Smith said that “DanceWorks is an engaging time where dancers of all levels and all majors get to join and dance for the upcoming spring performance.” Smith also shared that student choreography and participation allows for dancers to “choose what their piece is about and this in turn means that some pieces are fun and lighthearted and some cover serious topics that need to be brought to light.”
Nelson said that creating an environment where everyone can be included regardless of major has “created a supportive community of people who all share a passion for dance.” Nelson also shared the versatility of dance styles that will be represented, saying “Contemporary, modern, jazz, tap, clogging, line dance and other styles will all be featured in the shows!”
DanceWorks will feature performances from first time and experienced choreographers, alumni, faculty and various Meredith dance groups. DanceWorks is free and open to the public.
