Holiday Art Sale

This November, the annual Holiday Art Sale will be hosted in the Frankie G. Weems Gallery in the Gaddy Hamrick Art Center.. The event is organized and hosted by the Artist Alliance, a club on campus for students. This sale will be an opportunity for Meredith community members to support students, alumni and faculty who create and sell art. Attending would be an opportunity to potentially find handmade presents for the upcoming holiday season.

The Herald contacted the president of the Artist Alliance, Kelsey Smith, ‘25, and invited her to further elaborate on the Holiday Art Sale. Smith noted that “the seller gets the majority of their earnings, but the other portion goes to the MASS Grant. The [Meredith Art Student Scholarship (MASS)] Grant is the department's grant that enables students to pursue medium[s], techniques, etc. in art.” Smith also added that “The winners can use their funds to purchase supplies and materials that will be used in their work.”

This year will be the 13th year the Holiday Art Sale has taken place. Each year, different items are available for purchase and different artists participate, so it is an opportunity to find one-of-a-kind gifts. Kelsey Smith said that “students sell original works, prints, jewelry, ceramics, fiber works, and more” and that “everything [sold] is handmade and of amazing quality.” To be eligible to sell work in the art sale, individuals must be currently enrolled in a visual arts course at Meredith or have taken a course in the past according to Smith.

Smith encourages that even if students do not purchase anything, that they should “spread the word” and share the event with family and friends.

The Holiday Art Sale will take place on Nov. 9 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Nov. 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If individuals are interested in selling items or becoming a member of the Artist Alliance, individuals can contact Kelsey Smith at Kelseysmith@email.meredith.edu. Smith encourages any Meredith student to join and that students do not have to have taken a course or be an Art student to join. Smith also shared some activities the Artist Alliance hosts which includes “Mural Painting, Art Fun Day and Pumpkin Painting.”
