On Friday, March 1 at 6:00pm, the Meredith International Association (MIA) will be hosting their annual culture show in Carswell Hall. This event showcases fashion, music, food, and representations of the diverse cultures from Meredith students.
Wanjiru Mambo is a member of the Class of 2024 and an international student from Kenya. Mambo calls the event a “wonderful cultural immersion” and said attendees could use the event to “learn about the diverse cultures that are represented here at Meredith.”
Mambo was a participant in the event in 2023 and said “Having the opportunity to display my traditional Agikũyũ outfit in person was a memorable time.” She shares that the Agikũyũ is a tribal group in Kenya that she is a part of. She shared that walking out on stage to model her outfit felt “exhilarating” and like a “red carpet moment”. Last year's Culture event was the first one back in person. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions on campus, the MIA event was held virtually in 2021 and 2022.
Attendees for the Culture Show can expect to see fashion showcased, international songs performed, poems recited, presentations about an individual's country, cultural dance, and much more.
The event is open to students, faculty, staff and alumni. This event also counts as an academic and cultural event for students. Mambo says “Come one, come all. It's all about good vibes and inshallah.”
