Due to the inclement weather and cancellation of classes that was announced via email on Feb. 18, the Meredith Students for Justice in Palestine (MSJP) Palestinian Culture Night has been postponed. The event will now take place on Feb. 25 in the Cate Center. The Meredith Events website states that MSJP invites everyone to come out for a night of celebrating the rich beauty of Palestinian culture.
As per the Events website, which features the flyer for the event, there will be several events including cultural presentations by Palestinian students at Meredith, listening and learning Palestinian music, learning popular traditional Palestinian dances, and a Palestinian dinner . This event will take place in 2nd Cate from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets can be bought online, $8 for Meredith students and staff, and $10 for everyone else, according to the flyer on Instagram. Club President, Leslie Kramer ‘27, extends an invite to everyone. Kramer shared that, “This event is open to people of any background- whether or not you know much about the specific situation or history of Palestine, you are welcome” and noted that “everyone deserves the beauty of human diversity and connection.”
Kramer noted that the purpose of the Palestinian Cultural Night is to “bring light to a culture that for too long has been intentionally destroyed and erased.” She went on to share more about the history and culture of Palestine, noting that “Palestinians have such a rich and deep cultural history,” while adding that “the occupation and ethnic cleansing to which [Palestinians] have been subject for nearly a century has resulted in so much coordinated erasure of their culture.”
In addition, Kramer hopes to highlight the “beauty and wonder” of Palestinian culture rather than just a headline in the news. Overall, Kramer hopes that Meredith students in attendance not only learn about Palestinian culture, but can also take away messages relating to overall cultural openness and appreciation.
The Herald also reached out to other members of the organization, including Amirah Clark ‘25, to learn more about the goals of the event. Clark shared that MSJP is looking to “raise awareness about Palestinian culture and raise money for the community suffering in Gaza.” Clark also noted that MSJP will have speakers at the event.
