Pop Culture with Aminah: Not Your Mom’s Last-Minute Halloween Costumes

With only six days left until Halloween, I’m sure you’re wondering if it’s even worth dressing up. I’m here to tell you that it is. This year’s festivities certainly won’t be the same, but you still deserve to celebrate in style. Here are eight last-minute costumes that you can execute and feel good about, even in the middle of a pandemic.

Simple: Easy But Impressive

White Lies

White lie themes have been all the rage this month on TikTok. This twist on two truths and a lie (minus the truths, of course) will give you plenty of talking points for a fun (socially distanced) night. Just write your funny or ironic lie on the white t-shirt, and you’re good to go.

What you’ll need:

1. A white t-shirt (this also works with tank tops)

2. Sharpie

3. A lie — for example, if you have a dog then write “I am a cat person”

Euphoria

The outfits from the HBO hit drama Euphoria are amazing, but the makeup looks are what really set the show apart from other teen dramas. Recreating looks from the show is a perfect costume for anyone who loves to be creative. What you’ll need:

2. Amy Serrano’s recreation tutorial of Maddy’s makeup looks

3. Face gem stickers (optional)

Dynamic Duos: Perfect For Friend Groups

David and Stevie (Schitt’s Creek)

Anyone who's seen Schitt’s Creek knows that it’s not the outfits that make David and Stevie’s friendship work, but it’s all about the attitude. If you have a friend that you can’t live without, this one is perfect for both of you.

What you’ll need:

1. David

b. Black t-shirt

c. Black leggings

d. Black Converse or any black shoes

2. Stevie

a. Flannel

b. Jeans

c. Brown wig and wig cap (optional)

d. Black Converse or any black shoe

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly (inspired by the “Bloody Valentine” music video)

Not only is this costume a fun and frisky halloween choice, but it could be fun to dress up and be a little dangerous. This could be a fun twist on a couples’ costume.

What you’ll need:

1. Megan Fox

a. Leather or black/dark jacket

d. Black shorts or spandex

e. Brown wig and wig cap (optional)

2. Machine Gun Kelly

c. Light wash jeans

d. Black Vans or any black shoe

The Bad Wiggies

If you haven’t seen The Bad Wiggies on your TikTok timeline, you’re missing out. This could be a couple’s costume or a group costume, since there are three wiggies. So grab your costume and be sure to film a lot of lip sync TikToks.

What you’ll need:

1. A colorful wig (don’t worry if this one isn’t your cup of tea, there are so many options available)

2. A wig cap

3. A cute outfit from your closet

Free Reign: It’s Up to You

Your Mom…

Okay, maybe the title is a little misleading. But I think we can all agree that our moms were baddies back in the day. So whether you raid her closet or a local thrift store, you’re sure to find something to use in recreating her look.

What you’ll need:

1. A picture for inspiration

2. A trip to your local thrift store

3. Time to raid your mom’s closet (optional)

The Alternative Universe You

This costume is completely open to interpretation (and perfect for a procrastinator). It’s all about making sure that you feel good about what you’re wearing. To put it simply, dress however you want to and use this costume as a description. After all, a costume is what you make it.

What you’ll need:

1. An outfit you feel good wearing
