On Oct. 9, Meredith College Volleyball beat rival William Peace 3-0. According to outside hitter Madelyn Clark, the team had “picked up a big win against our cross-town rival William Peace last week” and “beat them on their home court two weeks ago in a tough five set match.” “They would be coming to our house seeking revenge,” said Clark. Delaney Lowery, ‘28, topped set two with five kills, and in set three, Caitlyn Russell, ‘27, hit twelve kills and six aces. Lexie House, ‘26, scored an additional five aces. Middle blocker Daven Brabble, ‘28, said that Peace is “a very strong team” and that “knowing that brings out the best in [the] team as a whole.” Brabble stated that she thought the Avenging Angels “played as a team throughout” and that it “played a huge role in out victory over [Peace.]” Brabble also added that she enjoyed seeing the team having fun and “cheering each other on against some of the best competition [they] face in the season,” and that she looks forward to the rest of her season with the team. Clark said they “had an awesome crowd for the game and [the] team fed off the energy they created!” Clark also added that they “are about half way through our conference season and have some really important matches coming up,” and “would love to see more big crowds at [their] remaining games.”
On Oct. 8, Soccer played against the Methodist Monarchs, but lost 0-3. Goalkeeper Khalia Jones, a graduate student, played the full match and made five saves. On Oct. 12, the Avenging Angels made a comeback in a 3-0 victory over Pfeiffer University. The Angels opened with an unassisted goal from Kate Conoley, ‘28, in the 16th minute, and scored the third goal from Conoley in the 51st minute with an assist from Meredith Warrick, ‘25. Rebecca Morrison, a graduate student, scored the second goal in the 30th minute. Earlier this month, Conoley was named USA South Rookie of the Month, according to the Go Avenging Angels website. Conoley said that “Being named rookie of the week is great but [she] couldn’t do it without the rest of [her] team.” She also added that she was “confident about the rest of the season because [she has] a great team with amazing potential and… can’t wait to continue to compete with these girls!” All results canbe found on the Go Avenging Angels website.
Field Hockey defeated Southern Virginia 5-1 on Oct. 12. Maya Kirstein, ‘28, scored three goals, two of which were assisted by Cambria Chandler, ‘26. Charlotte Dyer, ‘27 scored a goal unassisted, and Jordan Brooks, ‘26, scored assisted by Carleigh Harris, ‘28. For more scores and statistics, visit the Go Avenging Angels website. The matchup was also Senior day, where Senior Shae-Lynn Henderson was recognized as Meredith College’s first four-year NCAA Athlete, as noted by the Go Avenging Angels page. Henderson said she was “thankful to the players who came before [her] and established the team in 2020” and that she “cannot wait to see the future of the program for years to come.” Henderson added that “The season is so close to the end” and shared that she is “not sure [she is] quite ready to say goodbye.” However, she also expressed that she planned “on enjoying these last moments on the field.”
