Sports Column: Weekend Round-Up


Volleyball:

On Aug. 30 and Sept. 1, the Avenging Angels Volleyball team competed in the Averett Invitational in Danville, V.A. The team lost the first match on Friday against Lynchburg but then went on to beat Averett University 3-2. The Go Avenging Angels website recorded that Caitlyn Russell, ‘27, recorded 21 kills against Lynchburg and Hannah Joe Jablonski, ‘25, had a match high of 29 digs. Additionally, The Go Avenging Angels website noted that Lillie Davis, ‘26, had 44 assists and 15 digs. In the second match against Averett, Delaney Lowery, ‘28, finished with 14 kills and Regan Kresho, ‘28, scored six aces (serves that hit the ground on the opposing team’s side), according to the recorded statistics. Davis also earned a double-double (double digits in two categories) by earning 62 assists and 11 digs.

On Saturday, the Angels defeated both Guilford (3-1) and Roanoke College (3-2). In the first match, Madelyn Clark, ‘25, earned 9 kills. Against Roanoke, the team finished the fifth set 15-13 to win the match, with Kinsey Copeland, ‘27, finishing with 10 kills and Davis earning her third double-double of the weekend (40 assists and 13 digs), according to the box score.

Their next game is on Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. at home.

Field Hockey:

The Meredith Field Hockey team had their home opener on Sept. 1 against Goucher. The team lost 3-4 with goals scored by Charlotte Dyer, ‘27, Megan Ingenito, ‘27, and Maya Kirstein, ‘28 according to the Go Avenging Angels  website. Kirstein scored her first college career goal in the 51st minute. The Field Hockey team returns for another home game against Sweet Briar College on Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m. 

Soccer:

The Meredith Soccer team played on both Aug. 30 and Aug. 31 against Wisconsin Lutheran College and Bob Jones University respectively. In Friday’s match-up, the team won 3-2 according to the Go Avenging Angels website, with Rebecca Morrison, Graduate student, Kate Conoley, ‘28, and Meredith Warrick,  ‘25, all scoring. In the second match-up, the team lost 0-2 according to the Go Avenging Angels stats. The soccer team returns for an away game against Huntingdon College on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.
