Weekly Sports Wrap-up: Angels Suffer Tough Losses

April 12: Softball doubleheader game against William Peace University


The softball team lost their first game against William Peace with a final score of 1-2. Sarah Gundlach was the pitcher for this game. Sarah Manis, Anna Goldman, Alyssa Drake, Fallon Wimberly, Savannah Talley, Susanne Taylor and Madison Hamilton all were up to bat three times each. Jessie Woller scored the one run of the game and was up to bat twice. Laura Tobin was up to bat twice. Brie Caldwell was up to bat once.


During the second game, Meredith had a comeback and finished with a final score of 8-7. Alexa Daniel and Gundlach were the pitchers for this game. Woller was up to bat four times and scored two runs. Drake and Wimberly both scored one run and bat four times. Mia Staggs and Goldman both bat four times. Talley, Kendall Johnson and Tobin each bat three times and scored one run. Hamilton bat twice and scored two runs.


April 13: Tennis match against Methodist University


The tennis team lost their match against Methodist University with a final score of 0-9.


April 14: Tennis match against Salem College


The tennis team won their match against Salem College with a score of 9-0.


April 14: Lacrosse game against Roanoke College


The lacrosse team lost their game against Roanoke College with a final score of 4-18.Olivia Verlinden had one goal on one shot and also had one assist. Tori Witmer also had one goal on one shot. Sophomore Arrianna May scored one goal on two shots. Kylie Phillips had one goal on four shots. Maya Flake had one assist in the game. Goalie Madeline Horrell had 8 saves and goalie Mackenzie Bianchi had 4 saves.


April 16: Track and Field at the Spartan Relays


The Meredith Track and Field teams competed in the Spartan Relays and finished 6th overall. On the first day of the competition, the athletes competed in mostly field events and preliminary events. Grace Olufemi-Ajayi ran the 100m prelims and finished with a time of 13.25. Taylor O’Neal ran the 100m dash and finished with a time of 13.70. De’Ja Morgan ran the 100m dash and finished with a time of 14.82. Isabella Saudo ran the 100m dash and finished with a time of 16.20.


Stem Martin threw javelin and finished with a distance of 24.14m. Shaniya Taylor threw javelin and finished with a distance of 22.42m. Danika Ray threw a javelin and finished with a throw of 18.41m.


On the second day of the competition, the team participated in mostly running events and finished the remaining field events. Julie Tonon raced in the 1500m and finished 5th with a time of 5:06.85. Isabella Saudo ran the 1500m and finished with a time of 5:46.26. Stem Martin ran the 400m dash and ran a time of 1:11.54. Andrea Gallegos ran the 800m race finishing 7th with a time of 2:30.81. Claire Miller ran the 800m dash and finished with a time of 2:46.08. Keerthi Tammineni ran the 800m and finished with a time of 3:24.52.


Corrine Weaver ran the 400m hurdles and finished with a time of 1:11.66 finishing in 4th place. Mia Russell ran the 400m hurdles and finished with a time of 1:29.68. Barresha Jones ran the 200m dash and finished with a time of 29.97. Adriana Melton ran the 200m dash and finished with a time of 31.12. De’Ja Morgan ran the 200m dash and finished with a time of 31.22. Barresha Jones, Grace Olufemi-Ajayi, Taylor O’Neal and Shelby Frye ran the 4x100m relay and finished with a time of 52.64. Stem Martin, Corrine Weaver, Andrea Gallegos and Shelby Frye ran the 4x400m race and finished with a time of 4:32.11. In field events, Sophie Phillips finished 5th in the high jump with a final jump of 1.43m. Adriana Melton jumped in the long jump with a final jump of 3.56m. Tylena Brown threw in the shot put and discus and finished with distances of 9.86m and 27.10m. Danika Ray threw in the discus and finished with a distance of 29.38m. Abby Black threw in the discus and finished with a distance of 16.85m. Next week the Track and Field teams will be headed to Berea, KY for the USA South Championships.


April 16: Lacrosse game against Greensboro College


The lacrosse team defeated Greensboro College with a final score of 20-1. Horrell and Bianchi were the goalies for this game. Verlinden, Lauryn Turner and Ava Spradley scored three goals, one assist and three total shots. Phillips scored two goals and had three total shots. Kayleigh Murphy scored two goals and two total shots. Flake scored one goal, seven assists and one total shot. Witmer scored one goal, one assist and two total shots. Lauren Oliver scored one goal and three total shots. Jessica Dowdy and Kamryn Muschette scored one goal and two total shots. Caroline Butler and Olivia Blake scored one goal and one shot total. On April 20 the Angels play against Christopher Newport University.


April 16: Softball doubleheader game against Mary Baldwin University


The softball team lost their first game against Mary Baldwin with a final score of 0-2. Gundlach pitched for this game. Staggs, Savannah Talley, Woller and Susanne Taylor all bat four times. Manis, Goldman, Drake, Wimberly and Tobin all bat twice.


The Angels won their second game with a final score of 12-3. Daniel was the pitcher for this game. Woller bat five times and scored three runs. Goldman and Fallon Wimberly bat five times and scored two runs. Drake, Hamilton and Kendall Johnson bat four times and scored one run. Manis and Tobin bat three times and scored one run. Taylor Walker bat three times. Gracie Massengale and Rheanne Burden bat once. The softball team competes on April 20 against Averett University.
