Weekly Sports Wrap-Up: Busy Week for Avenging Angels

April 5: Tennis match against William Peace University


The Avenging Angels won their game against William Peace University with a final score of 5-1.


April 6: Softball doubleheader against Pfeiffer University


The softball team won the first game of their doubleheader against Pfeiffer University with a final score of 6-4. Madison Hamilton led the team with four hits and also had one run batted in (RBI). Sarah Manis and Alyssa Drake each had two hits and one RBI. Freshman Jessie Woller also had two hits. Senior Anna Goldman had one hit, which was a double. Susanne Taylor and Brie Caldwell each had one hit and one RBI. Fallon Wimberly also had one hit. Senior Sarah Gundlach struck out seven batters and threw 76 strikes out of a total of 128 pitches.


The Avenging Angels lost the second game of the doubleheader with a final score of 10-11. Manis had three hits and one RBI. Goldman had two hits and three RBIs. Wimberly had two hits and two RBIs. Drake had one hit and two RBIs, including an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Woller had one hit and one RBI. Taylor Walker, ‘22, and Laura Tobin had one hit each. Gundlach and freshman Alexa Daniel split pitching duties. Gundlach struck out two batters and Daniel struck out three.


April 6: Lacrosse game against Methodist University


The lacrosse team won their game against Methodist University with a score of 24-8. The team finished with 24 goals, 11 assists, 44 shots, 37 shots on goal, 29 ground balls, 18 draw controls, 20 turnovers and 15 caused turnovers. Madeline Horrell and Mackenzie Bianchi were the goalies for this game. Kylie Phillips scored eight goals, one assist and 12 total shots. Freshmen Kayleigh Murphy and Ava Spradley both scored three goals, one assist and five total shots. Jessica Dowdy scored three goals with five total shots. Freshman Olivia Verlinden scored two goals, one assist and six total shots. Arrianna May scored two goals, one assist and two total shots. Tori Witmer scored one goal with three total shots. Freshman Lauryn Turner scored one goal with two total shots. Freshman Sophie Hutton scored one goal with one total shot. Senior Maya Flake had five assists and two total shots. Freshman Sophie LeClaire had one assist and one total shot.


April 8: Lacrosse game against Southern Virginia University


The Meredith lacrosse team beat Southern Virginia University on Friday with a final score of 14-4. May led the team with six goals on six shots. Turner scored 3 goals on three shots and had one assist. Witmer, Phillips and Verlinden all had one goal and one assist. Dowdy also scored one goal. Bianchi and Horrell both played goalie. Bianchi had six saves, and Horell had four; each only allowed two goals.


April 9: Track and Field meet at Wildcat Track Festival


Julie Tonon finished in 1st place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:09.70. Isabella Saudo also competed in the 5,000, placing 8th with a time of 21:21.98. Corrine Weaver competed in the 800, finishing in 2nd place with a time of 2:24.88. Andrea Gallegos finished the 800 in a time of 2:37.70, placing 10th. Michelle Gladdis finished the 800 in 14th place with a time of 2:41.96. Claire Miller finished 22nd overall in the 800 with a time of 2:57.14.


Danika Ray finished 11th in the hammer throw with a distance of 22.81 meters, she also finished 9th in shot put with a distance of 7.96 meters. Abby Black also competed in the hammer throw and finished in 12th with a distance of 19.92 meters; she also placed 12th in shot put, throwing for a distance of 7.03 meters. Ray and Black also competed in the discus, Ray finished in 10th and Black finished in 9th with distances of 22.90 meters and 16.83 meters. Shelby Frye and Adriana Melton finished 16th and 17th in the long jump with distances of 3.57 meters and 3.53 meters. Tylena Brown competed in the shotput and finished in 4th, throwing for a distance of 9.68 meters, she also competed in discus and finished 9th with a distance of 24.61 meters. Brown, Ray, Black, Emma Martin and Shaniya Taylor all competed in the javelin throw. Ray finished 4th (20.35m), Brown finished 5th (19.62m), Taylor finished 6th (18.96m), Martin finished 8th (14.32m) and Black finished 9th (14.20m).


April 9: Softball doubleheader against Methodist University


The softball team won the first game of their doubleheader in extra innings with a final score of 3-2. Sophomore Savannah Talley had three hits, including one run batted in (RBI). Wimberly had two hits. Taylor had one hit, which was an RBI single. Drake also had one hit. Gundlach pitched all nine innings, striking out 14 batters and only allowing three hits through nine innings.


The softball team lost the second game of their doubleheader 2-6. Drake had two hits, including one RBI double. Leadoff hitter Mia Staggs had two hits. Manis, Goldman and Taylor all had one hit. Daniel started on the mound and had four strikeouts over four innings. Brie Cadwell came in during the 5th inning and struck out two batters. Wimberly finished the game pitching, striking out one batter. The Avenging Angels’ next game is Tuesday, April 12 against cross-town rival William Peace University.


April 9: Tennis match against Southern Virginia (Senior Day)


On Senior Day, the tennis team lost their match to Southern Virginia University with a final score of 1-8.


April 9: Lacrosse game against Huntingdon College


The Avenging Angels won their game against Huntingdon College 22-1. Dowdy had four goals on four shots and four assists. Verlinden scored three goals on six shots and assisted on two goals. Turner had three goals on five shots, sophomore Kamryn Muschette scored three goals on three shots, and Ava Spradley scored three goals on six shots. Phillips scored two goals on three shots and had one assist. Hutton also scored two goals on nine shots. Witmer had one goal and one assist on one shot. Flake had three assists in the game. Horrell and Bianchi split goalie duties. Horrell had one save and Bianchi had three. Each goalie only allowed one goal. The team’s next game is this Thursday at Roanoke College.


April 10: Softball doubleheader against Christopher Newport University


The softball team lost both games in their doubleheader matchup against Christopher Newport University. The first game ended with a final score of 3-11. Tobin and Kendall Johnson both had two hits. Goldman and Manis each had one hit and one RBI. Center fielder Drake and third baseman Rheanne Burden had one hit. Caldwell finished the game with one RBI. Emily Clemmons and Danielle Hunt pitched in this game; Hunt had one strikeout.


Softball also lost the second game of their doubleheader 0-9. Victoria Negron, Goldman and Drake all had one hit. Hannah Weigle and Wimberly both pitched in this game. Weigle and Wimberly both struck out one batter.
