Weekly Sports Wrap-Up: Sept. 18-25

Sept. 18-19: Tennis match at the Methodist Invitational


The tennis team kicked off their season at the Methodist Invitational. The team competed in four doubles flights and seven singles flights. Summer Elkins claimed the championship in the seventh flight. Claire Summer was 2-1 in the two days of competition. Freshman Javi Brito earned two wins as well in the seventh flight. Aly Henneberry competed in the number four singles flight but lost in the seventh place match. Freshman Ellie Osborne picked up an 8-7 win. The team's next match is scheduled for Sept. 24 at 6 p.m.


Sept. 22: Volleyball game against Methodist University


The volleyball team won against Methodist University with a final score of 3-0. Senior Whitney Bolton had a total of 24 attempts and 11 kills. Lauren Bissette had a total of 23 attempts, 14 kills, one dig and two block assists. Freshman Madelyn Clark had 23 attempts, six kills and four digs. Freshman Sara Dees had 15 total attempts, five kills, one dig and one block assist. Freshman Ali Polidori had 15 total attempts, two kills, two digs and one block assist. Senior Avery Bowman had nine total attempts, five kills, nine digs and two block assists. Freshman Martin-Maine Wrangell had eight total attempts, three kills and six digs. Senior Lauren Phillips had 21 digs. Hannah Jo Jablonski had nine digs. Freshman Emily Emerson had five digs.


Sept. 23: Field hockey game against Ferrum College


The field hockey team lost against Ferrus College with a final score of 0-5. Freshman Shae-Lynn Henderson was the goalie for this game. Senior Tylena Brown had three shots and three shots on goal. Lizzy Herrera-Mendez had one shot and one shot on goal. Bella Allen had one shot total.


Sept. 24: Cross country meet at the Queen City Invitational


The cross country team placed seventeenth out of 32 in the Queen City Invitational. Corrine Weaver finished with a time of 19:01. Julie Tonon finished with a time of 19:19. Andrea Gallegos finished with a time of 20:26. Isabella Saudo finished with a time of 20:43. Kaylee Spencer finished with a time of 20:47. Ashleigh Buser finished with a time of 21:28. Claire Miller finished with a time of 23:02. Emily Ward finished with a time of 23:02. Emma Brooks finished with a time of 25:07. Senior Mitxi Ortiz finished with a time of 26:54. Freshman Keerthi Tammineni finished with a time of 27:52. Mia Russell finished with a time of 28:42. Their next meet is scheduled for Oct. 8 at the Royals XC Challenge at Queens University.


Sept. 24: Tennis match against Guilford College


The tennis team won against Guilford College with a final score of 6-3. Summer Elkins and Ryann Jennings won in the doubles category with a score of 8-5. Savannah Duduk and Claire Southern won their doubles set with a score of 8-1. Aly Henneberry won in her single match and finished with a score of 2-6 in the first round and 4-6 in the second. Summer Elkins won her single match with a final score of 2-6 in the first round then 0-6 in the second. Ryann Jennings won her singles match with a score of 1-6 in the first match and 4-6 in the second. Claire Southern won her watch with a score of 0-6 in the first match and 1-6 in the second. The next tennis match is scheduled for Feb. 12, 2022 against Catawba College.


Sept. 25: Soccer game against Averett University


The soccer team won their game against Averett University with a final score of 2-1. Freshman Kalin Creech had four shots and three shots on goal. Morgan Thomas had two shots, one shot on goal and one goal. Madeline Ostrowski had two shots, two shots on goal and two assists. Claire-Emma Britt had one shot, one shot on goal and one goal. Kaelin Sanderford, Meredith Warrick and Lillian Bennett all had one shot and one shot one goal each. Freshman Lauren Webster had one shot. The soccer team’s next game is Sep. 28 against North Carolina Wesleyan College.


Sept. 25: Volleyball game against Mary Baldwin University


The volleyball team won against Mary Baldwin University with a final score of 3-0. Whitney Bolton had 17 attempts and nine kills. Madelyn Clark had 17 attempts total, six kills and one block assist. Lauren Bissette had 15 total attempts, nine kills, one block solo and four block assists. Avery Bowman had 14 total attempts, five kills, seven digs and three block assists. Sara Dees had 13 total attempts, seven kills and one dig. Hailey Long had 10 total attempts, two kills and one dig. Freshman Chloe Cochran had one total attempt. Lauren Phillips had 15 digs. Hannah Jo Jablonski had five digs. Senior Bailey Lucas had four digs. Emily Emerson had two digs.


Sept. 25: Field hockey game against Randolph-Macon College


The field hockey team lost 0-9 against Randolph-Macon College. Their next game is set for Sep. 28 against Virginia Wesleyan University.


Sept. 25: Volleyball game against Southern Virginia University


The volleyball team lost against Southern Virginia University with a final score of 1-3. Avery Bowman had 29 total attempts, six kills, eight digs and three block assists. Hailey Long had 27 total attempts and six kills. Madelyn Clark had 27 total attempts, seven kills, two digs and one block assist. Lauren Bissette had 24 attempts, six kills, three digs and five block assists. Whitney Bolton had 20 total attempts, six kills, three digs and three block assists. Sara Dees had 14 total attempts, eight kills and two block assists. Bailey Lucas had three total attempts, one kill and eight digs. Lauren Phillips had two total attempts, one kill and 21 digs. Hannah Jo Jablonski had 12 digs. Emily Emerson had three digs. Volleyball is scheduled to play again Sep. 29 at Salem College.
