Weekly Sports Wrap-Up: Spring Break Brings Wins for Avenging Angels

Spring break was a busy week for the Avenging Angels, with a total of 13 games and events. In the week leading up to spring break, lacrosse won one game and lost another, and track and field competed at the Seahawk Invitational. During break, the softball team won seven out of eight games, while tennis took losses in both games and lacrosse again won one and lost one.


March 9: Lacrosse game against William Peace University


The lacrosse team crushed the Pacers with a final score of 23-1. Madeline Horrell and Mackenzie Bianchi were the goalies for this game. Arrianna May scored five goals, one assist and had eight total shots. Freshman Olivia Verlinden scored five goals and had a total of seven shots. Senior Maya Flake scored three goals, four assists and three total shots. Kylie Phillips scored three goals, one assist and six total shots. Tori Witmer scored two goals, had three assists and six total shots. Jessica Dowdy scored one goal, three assists and five total shots. Freshman Lauryn Turner scored one goal, one assist and two total shots. Freshman Ava Spradley scored one goal and had three total shots. Freshman Sophie Hutton scored one goal and had two total shots. Kamryn Muschette scored one goal and had one total shot.


March 12: Track and field at the Seahawk Invitational


The track and field teams did great at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington in not-so-great conditions. Highlights from the competition included Julie Tonon placing 1st in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:53.40, a personal best. Isabella Saudo was close behind her in 5th place with another personal best time of 21:41.59. Grace Olufemi-Ajayi came in 2nd in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.37. Freshman Shelby Frye was right behind Olufemi-Ajayi in the 200, coming in 3rd place with a time of 31.27. Corrine Weaver came in 3rd place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.87.


Jazmin Reyes placed 4th in the 200 (32.34) and Stem Martin was right behind in 5th place (33.09). Weaver placed 4th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:10.18. Michelle Gladdis was close behind her in 8th place with a time of 5:43.74. Andrea Gallegos placed 5th in the 800 with a time of 2:39.02. Olufemi-Ajayi also ran the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.73, coming in 5th place. Senior Shaniya Taylor and freshman Adriana Melton were right behind her in 6th and 7th places with times of 14.72 and 14.81, respectively. The 4x100 meter relay team, consisting of Taylor, Frye, Olufemi-Ajayi and freshman Taylor O’Neal, placed 4th in their competition with a time of 53.42.


Danika Ray placed 5th in the discus throw with a distance of 25.25 meters. Other highlights include senior Tylena Brown’s school record hammer throw of 27.75 meters, putting her in 8th place. In the long jump, 4th-place finisher Frye and 5th-place finisher Melton both set personal bests with distances of 4.18 meters and 3.87 meters, respectively.


March 12: Lacrosse game against Shenandoah University


The lacrosse team fought hard in this game but lost 11-9 to Shenandoah. Horrell and Bianchi each were goalies for 30 minutes. May scored three goals, one assist and six shots total. Flake scored one goal, one assist and one total shot. Dowdy scored one goal and had one total shot. Phillips and Verlinden both scored one goal and had three shots. Turner and Witmer both scored one goal and two shots. Freshman Kayleigh Murphy had one total shot.


March 13: Tennis match against Mars Hill University


The tennis team lost their match 1-6 against Mars Hill. Savannah Duduk scored a singles match win. Summer Elkins and Ryann Jennings were able to pick up a doubles win for Meredith.


March 14: Softball game against Lasell College


The softball team defeated Lasell College with a final score of 11-2. Brie Caldwell was the pitcher for this game. Senior Anna Goldman was up to bat four times and scored two runs. Jessie Woller was up to bat four times. Alyssa Drake was up to bat three times and scored four runs. Sarah Manis was up to bat three times and scored one run. Kendall Johnson, Laura Tobin and senior Taylor Walker all went to bat three times. Fallon Wimberly was up to bat twice and scored two runs. Freshman Victoria Negron was up to bat twice and scored one run. Mia Staggs was up to bat once and scored one run. Freshmen Gracie Massengale and Rheanne Burden were both up to bat once.


March 14: Softball game against Millsaps College


Meredith squeaked by in this game with a final score of 4-2. Senior Sarah Gundlach was the pitcher for this game. Drake was at bat four times and scored two runs. Manis and Madison Hamilton were both up to bat four times and scored one run each. Goldman, Wimberly and Susanne Taylor were all up to bat three times. Savannah Talley, freshman Jessie Woller and senior Emily Velazquez all bat twice each. Burden got to bat once.


March 14: Tennis match against Brevard College


The tennis team lost to Brevard College 6-3.


March 15: Softball game against University of Minnesota, Morris


The softball team dominated the University of Minnesota, Morris with a final score of 16-2. Emily Clemmons and freshman Alexa Daniel were the pitchers for this game. Wimberly was up to bat four times and scored three runs. Manis and Staggs both bat four times and scored two runs each. Negron bat four times and scored one run. Drake bat three times and scored three runs. Walker was up to bat three times and scored two runs. Tobin bat three times and scored one run. Goldman was at bat twice and scored two runs. Woller bat twice, and Massengale, Burden and Hannah Weigle all bat once.


March 15: Softball game against Bethel University


Meredith lost to Bethel University 0-7. Weigle and Danielle Hunt were the pitchers for this game. Manis, Hamilton, Goldman, Drake and Wimberly all bat three times. Taylor, Talley, Woller and Velazquez were all up to bat twice.


March 15: Lacrosse game against Albright College


The lacrosse team beat Albright College with a score of 19-12. Horrell and Bianchi were the goalies for this game. May scored seven goals, one assist and had ten shots total. Dowdy scored five goals, one assist and had nine total shots. Phillips scored three goals, one assist and had three total shots. Flake scored two goals, seven assists and had two shots total. Witmer scored one goal, one assist and had two total shots. Spradley scored one goal and had one shot.


March 17: Softball game against Ripon College


Meredith won a close game with a final score of 4-1. Weigle was the pitcher for this game. Manis was up to bat four times and scored one run. Hamilton and Goldman both bat three times and scored one run. Drake bat twice and scored one run. Wimberly, Talley and Johnson got to bat three times. Tobin and Negron bat twice. Caldwell bat once.


Mar.17: Softball game against Fairleigh Dickinson University


Meredith softball crushed Fairleigh Dickinson University with a final score of 11-0. Gundlach was the pitcher for this game. Manis bat four times and scored two runs. Goldman and Velazquez bat four times and scored one run. Staggs was up to bat four times. Caldwell, Walker, Woller and Taylor bat three times and scored one run. Wimberly bat twice and scored one run. Massengale bat once and scored one run. Burden bat three times, and Weigle bat once.


Mar. 19: Softball double-header game against LaGrange College


The Avenging Angels won both games in the double header. The first game ended with a final score of 9-0. Daniel was the pitcher for the first game. Drake was up to bat four times and scored one run. Manis was at bat three times and scored two runs. Hamilton and Taylor bat three times and scored one run each. Goldman bat twice and scored two runs. Woller and Tobin were up to bat twice and scored one run. Wimberly was up to bat four times, andd Talley bat once.


The second game ended with a closer score of 4-3. Hunt and Gundlach were the pitchers for this game. Manis was at bat four times and scored one run. Goldman and Drake bat three times and scored one run each. Negron bat twice and scored one run. Staggs, Woller, Velazquez, Johnson and Massengale bat three times. Wimberly bat once. Softball’s next game is set for March 26 against Salem College.


Mar. 19: Lacrosse game against Randolph-Macon College


Lacrosse lost a close game to Randolph-Macon College with a final score of 14-15. Horrell and Bianchi were the goalies for this game. Verlinden scored six goals, one assist and nine total shots. Witmer scored two goals, one assist and three total shots. Flake scored two goals and had four total shots. Phillips scored two goals and had two total shots. May scored one goal, four assists and five total shots. Dowdy scored one goal and four total shots. Lacrosse’s next game is March 23 against Averett University.
